The Dawn of the Third Volume

The Echo, published in Rush, NY from 1879 to 1881 only lasted for two volumes (50 publications). It published every two weeks, for the low price of .25¢ delivered to your house.

Vol 1 No 1 of The Echo, Dec 1879

The publisher, Howard Wilson, was of the Wilson Family that ran a a general store in Rush. Howard was only 16 years old when he published The Echo. The sub headline reads "Multum Parvo" which is Latin for "Much in Little." The Echo was 5 1/2" by 7 3/4" inches - about the size of today's letter size paper folded in half. It was only one page (four "sides") filled with local news, funny stories, reprinted articles from other newspapers and whatnot.

You can read all of them on the New York State Newspaper Archives.

This new version (Volume 3) of The Echo is considerably easier to produce and distribute than the original. If you know anything about how printing worked in the late 1800's you'll know why only one came out every two weeks. Another big reason was probably that Howard had schoolwork and chores to do in addition to running a newspaper and trying to scare up printing jobs.

In any case, we're going to do some of the same things here that Howard did. Just some small town shenanigans. Contact us if you want to participate. Writers (and advertising) wanted.
